Thomsen’s Manufacturing was founded in 2017 to provide solutions to the problems Chris Thomsen had to solve during his 40-year career in the elevator and escalator industry, working with Westinghouse, Otis, Schindler, Montgomery, Kone elevator, and escalator manufacturers. He developed the current step chain oiling system eliminating years of unnecessary step chain replacements. He created the existing industry-standard LED Demarcation lights for escalators, eliminating endless fines for florescent tube failures and out of order demarcation lights. Proved the failure of one manufacturer’s existing elevator emergency-earthquake-shutdown protection and helped eliminate huge safety and liability concerns with a retrofit to the existing system.
Since his retirement in 2012, Chris has used his significant experience and unique problem-solving abilities to develop and patent major improvements in escalator and elevator safety. The patented Thomsen’s Escalator Handrail Cleaning System is one of those improvements. This invention eliminated the need to shut down the system to clean, disinfect, and polish escalator handrails. Other patentable inventions are in development.
The combination of Chris’ products, processes, and chemicals provides cost-effective, efficient, and sanitary cleaning. We call this The Thomsen Way! This is the core of why our handrail cleaning systems can assure the traveling public that your escalators are clean and safe.

Covid-19
The current Covid-19 crisis has exposed the risk Chris has known for years relating to escalator and other handrails. Chris has been a strong advocate for frequent cleaning and conditioning of handrails, not just to remove dirt, but to make them healthier and safer as well. Chris has know for a long time that escalator safety was declining because people were not willing to touch the hand rail for fear of dirt and germs. Handrails are an integral and very important safety device. Chris has seen first hand how the more the public’s “don’t touch” message has contributed to an increase in unnecessary and sometimes fatal accidents.
The current CDC guidelines Cleaning and Disinfecting Your Facility require that frequently touched surfaces, like escalator handrails, should be cleaned and disinfected at least daily. The Food Industry Association published guidance on April 14, 2020, COVID-19 Cleaning and Disinfection for Human-Touch Surfaces requires cleaning these surfaces every 15 minutes to 2 hours. Many local ordinances in reaction to Covid-19 require cleaning high-touch surfaces every 4 hours. Whether you need to clean every day, 15 minutes, or other periods in between, this becomes an expensive and ineffective proposition with staff, hand-rags, and over the counter cleaners. The Thomsen Way provides you an efficient, effective, and convenient solution to ensure your traveling public’s safety, cleanliness, and health.
Chris pioneered The Thomsen Way to provide a complete system to insure clean, safe and healthy use of escalator handrails. Covid-19 has made that need even more important. Escalators and handrails, cleaned The Thomsen Way assure the traveling public that this escalator is clean, sanitized and safe to use. Now, you can “Hold on to That Handrail!” just as your parents used to say. You will stay clean, safe and remain healthy in your travels.
